Provident Fund is the significant portion of one’s savings towards their retirement, and for every employee, it is essential to know the PF balance. Now Employee’s Provident Fund Organization or EPFO has launched many new initiatives through which one can check the EPF balance anytime and from anywhere. So, now employees of an organization are no longer required to wait for their employers to share the PF statement at the end of the year to know their exact EPF Balance and contributions. It can be checked anytime right from the comfort of your house or office using any of the below-mentioned avenues.
Check EPF Balance Online using UAN
From 2014 onwards, EFPO has the mandate to use the UAN to check the PF balance online. Universal Account Number or UAN is the unique number assigned to every PF account, and there are online services where UAN is required to check the actual PF balance of the employees. The UAN based portals provide a variety of services which can be accessed only after entering the UAN number. The employees can check the PF passbook which gives the complete details about PF contribution and accumulated balance in the account.

Users can also download their UAN card and also update their KYC information for further assistance. However, to enjoy all these services, subscribers are required first to activate their UAN account and then log into the portal and download PF passbook.
Checking EPF Balance Online Without UAN
Employees who have not yet registered and activated their UAN number need to use the web-based facilities to check their EPF Balance. To make use of the facility, the employee needs to know their individual PF Account Number which is mentioned on their monthly pay slip, and after selecting the state, you need to choose the regional PD office. If you are not sure about this check, your payslip where the first two words are the code of the region and next three words are for regional PF office. Upon successful submission of the details, the users would get SMS about their PF balance. However, the data provided is not up-to-date compared to the UAN-based portal.
EFP Balance Check with SMS
EPFO has also launched SMS services to help the employees to know their PF balance along with the contribution details. It is the simple and easy process. The employees are required to send SMS to 07738299899 to avail the service. However, again this SMS service is only made available to the employees who have already activated their UAN number. You are required to type an SMS “EPFOHO UAN” followed by the first three letters of a preferred language. For instance, the employee needs to send SMS like EPFO UAN ENG to 07738299899 if they want to receive SMS in English. This number is only applicable for the Indian workforce, but not for others.
The SMS facility is available in many other Indian languages including Punjabi, Marathi, Telugu, Hindi, Gujarati, Bengali, Malayalam, Tamil and more. EPFO will only send details to the members that are registered. The SMS needs to be sent by the registered mobile number just to get the details regarding the PF balance. Moreover, you need to ensure that your UAN is seeded with the bank account, PAN and Aadhar without which this facility would be useless for you.
Missed Call Facility
This another facility offered by EPFO through which employees can check the EPF Balance. However, it is necessary that employees be registered with the UAN portal to enjoy the miss call facility. They need to use the registered mobile number to give missed call on 011-229901406. Once you give missed call to this number, you will receive an SMS on your mobile stating all the details regarding your EPFO Account. Again, you need to ensure that your UAN is seeded with the PAN, Aadhar and bank account. You need to seed this before using the facility and get the balance over SMS on your mobile.
EPFO Mobile App
All Smartphone users can go to Play Store and download the EPFO Mobile Application to check their respective EPF Balance and also their passbook. However, you would require activated UAN and registered mobile number to log in and access the application.
